California: A bill to legalize equal marriage rights died June 2 after it failed to gain the simple majority needed to pass the state Assembly. The bill lost by four votes.
New Mexico: The Navajo Nation Tribal Council voted June 3 to override a veto of a law that bans equal marriage rights on the nation's largest Indian reservation.
Texas: Hundreds protest outside a Christian school in Fort Worth June 5 as Gov. Rick Perry signed a bill to amend the constitution to ban marriage for same-sex couples. The Texas Senate approved the proposed constitutional amendment with a 21-8 vote last month and the House had already passed it. The measure, which did not require Perry's signature, will now go before voters.
