Slipstream Theatre Initiative Hosts Season 4 Preview and Fundraiser

Slipstream Theatre Initiative's name was not chosen accidentally. The word Slipstream itself has three meanings. The initiative's website describes it in this way: "1. In Physics: A force attaching itself to another force and pulling needed elements along with it. 2. In Literature: work that has elements of several literary genres but cannot be defined by a singular one. 3: in metaphysical (sic): the state of the subconscious mind, often experienced during dreaming, where one can access past lives and pull lessons learned from them into the present in order for the conscious mind to avoid repeating mistakes." And that's exactly what the theatre initiative does, it interprets old works with a brand-new twist that both modernizes, and teaches new lessons from the classics.
Now, four years after the initiative came into view with a very sparse, but hopeful, production of Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale," it is 24 full-scale productions deep, and ready for that start of its fourth season.
Fans of the company's works can join it in celebration on Saturday, Dec. 16, for a fundraiser and season preview. There is no admission charge and there will be plenty of food, drinks and activities.
Guests are welcome to bring friends and enjoy vignettes from each show this season, like Luna Alexander and Dan Johnson, who will take the stage with a "Tale from the Mitten." The evening's show will kick off with a number from company "heartthrob" Steve Xander Carson. Then, attendees can say hello to Slipstream's newest company members: Torri Lynne Frances and Manning Goldman. Frances and Goldman will show off their Othello and RuPaul, respectively. Mandy Logsdon will present a piece from her directorial debut of the classic "Tartuffe," and guests can expect Victoria Rose Weatherspoon's jazz stylings. Weatherspoon will present a number from "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill."
And, of course, attendees should brace themselves for some surprises. It wouldn't be Slipstream without some twists and turns, 'tis the season to enjoy and support local theatre. Join Slipstream in celebrating not just its new season, but the talent in the Metro-Detroit theatre community.
The Slipstream Theatre's Season 4 Preview Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Slipstream Theatre Initiative at 460 Hilton Road, Ferndale.
