Scheduled for Friday, May 10, Corktown Health Center will host the 10th annual Cheers to HELP benefit to aid in funding the LGBTQ-specific health center. Patrick Yankee is the Center’s chief development officer and he said this year is bigger than ever before for a variety of reasons.
“Because it’s the 10th anniversary we tried very hard to step it up and make it a little bit of a larger of an event and I think this year we have it,” Yankee said. “We have more sponsors than ever before, more silent auction items than ever before and we have a new venue this year. We are having it at The Eastern, which is in the Eastern Market on Russell Street and it really fits. It’s in a good location, good parking and, in the past, we were doing it at the Corktown location and we would turn this building into an events center, and it just doesn’t work anymore.”
At the event, attendees will be able to enjoy a strolling wine tasting, a variety of hors d’oeuvres, assorted desserts, a silent auction and a performance from Ben Sharkey. Beyond that, Yankee said he’s excited to introduce more people to the work of the Corktown Health Center, along with the programming that attendees will be supporting.
“Because it has evolved, and the event has evolved like the agency has evolved,” Yankee said. “This event benefits the programs at Corktown including the HIV program, but what we are doing also is we are going to be presenting our second annual LGBTQ Health Heroes Award. This year, it will be presented to Laura Marble who is the vice president of Blue Cross Blue Shield.”
Marble will be recognized for her dedicated work in the non-profit community to strengthen services to people living with HIV and for her support of Corktown Health Center’s efforts to address the health needs of LGBTQ people across the state of Michigan.
