Local groups to do outreach for World Asian Testing Day May 19

Thursday May 19 has been designated World ASIAN Testing Day by a coalition of Asian and Pacific Islander organizations across the globe. In the Detroit area, the day will be observed through Asians and Friends, Midwest AIDS Prevention Project, and Access holding a joint dance party and outreach event at Menjo’s nightclub in Detroit. Free HIV testing will be available for anyone during the evening there.

FERNDALE – Thursday May 19 has been designated World ASIAN Testing Day by a coalition of Asian and Pacific Islander organizations across the globe. In the Detroit area, the day will be observed through Asians and Friends, Midwest AIDS Prevention Project, and Access holding a joint dance party and outreach event at Menjo’s nightclub in Detroit. Free HIV testing will be available for anyone during the evening there.
Asian people are the world’s largest racial and ethnic group, making up nearly half of the world’s’s population. In the United States, persons of Asian descent make up about 4 percent of the population. HIV/AIDS is affecting a growing number of Asian people, with millions becoming infected each year in China, India, and in the countries of southeast Asia.
Asians and Friends is a local chapter of a national coalition of groups which serve as social, educational, and advocacy organizations for persons of Asian background. The local group is based at MAPP. Access is the Dearborn-based social service agency providing programs and services to the Arabic and Middle-Eastern community in Metro Detroit.
