Dear BTL,
It is my belief that independent bookstores are one of the most important tools of free speech and freedom of expression. In this day and age of the Patriot Act and communities censoring public libraries, only independent bookstores remain as a vehicle for alternative thinkers, writers, poets, and artists.
A Woman’s Prerogative has been an important part of Michigan’s feminist and lesbian community for many years. I applaud Amy Blake for her perseverance in a difficult environment. Feminist and GLBT bookstores are not only a resource for printed material, but are often the first step towards a safe house or a safer life. Amy and A Women’s Prerogative will be missed.
We wish Amy a wonderful retirement. On bleak winter Michigan days, please send us sunshine and warm thoughts. We won’t send you any Michigan weather, but we will send our warmest wishes.
