FERNDALE – In 81,000 square feet of flexible space, housing more than 180 General Motors vehicles spanning 10 decades, Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center will celebrate heritage this year at their 7th Annual Big Bash in the GM Heritage Center.
The 2006 Big Bash celebrates the heritage of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, presented against a backdrop of vintage General Motors vehicles spanning the past century. The event begins at 6 p.m. for general admission with a special guided tour for “limited edition” guests beginning at 5 p.m. All proceeds benefit Affirmations.
Attendees will stroll down memory lanes, visiting the past with Audre Lorde, Oscar Wilde and some of Michigan’s own local heroes. They can stop at The Woodward for a drink and continue on down 9 Mile road, perhaps taking in a 1931 V-16 Cadillac or a 1949 Buick Roadmaster. It’s all part of the event’s inter-connected theme, ‘Proud Heritage: celebrating the people and events that fueled our past and drive our future.’
Event planners say they found this year’s event particularly moving. “It’s really inspiring to learn about our LGBT history – about where’ve been and where we’ve come from,” said co-chair David Light. “Learning about that in a setting that brings the past to life is really perfect.”
Located near Mound & 16 Mile Roads, the GM Heritage Center is a private facility, not open to the public, showcasing a wide range of GM design, technology and innovation with almost a century of GM vehicles, historical information and memorabilia on display.
The Big Bash is sponsored by General Motors, Paramount Bank, Between The Lines, Compuware, Detroit Metro Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, KPMG, Miller Canfield Paddock & Stone, U-M Pride Network, Woodward Avenue Lofts, Buffalo Wild Wings, Visteon, and Great Stuff.
