Fifteenth annual race to cure breast cancer June 10

DETROIT РItÕs time again to lace up your athletic shoes and join the fight against breast cancer. MichiganÕs largest footrace, the 15th Annual Komen Detroit Race for the Cure, presented locally by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, will be held Saturday June 10 at Comerica Park in Detroit.
Honorary Race Chairs are Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and First Gentleman Dan Mulhern. Honorary Race Co-Chairs are Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick and Mrs. Carlita Kilpatrick. Online registration continues through June 8 and offline registrations will be taken through the morning of the race.
With a 5K competitive race timed by the Motor City Striders, a 5K walk and a one-mile walk, the Race offers something for everyone, regardless of fitness level. Ten thousand pink ribbons will decorate the route running up and back along Woodward Avenue from Comerica Park to Warren, where the Detroit Festival of the Arts will begin after the closing ceremony for the Race. Twenty bands and musical performers plus cheerleaders from schools and local sports teams will inspire runners and walkers, while celebrating progress and survivorship and honoring the memory of lost lives.
This yearÕs ChildrenÕs Area will remind visitors that ÒChildren are Co-Survivors Too,Ó with special inter-active opportunities for young people 17 and under. Opening at 7 a.m., families will be joined by Detroit Tigers ÒPawsÓ and Detroit Shock's ÒZap." Face-painters, balloons, treats and special goody bags round out the experience for the kids.
Everyone is encouraged to Òmake a day of it and make a differenceÓ with a visit to the Detroit Festival of the Arts following the Race activities.
Free shuttles will run between Comerica Park and the Detroit Festival of the Arts from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Race participants will all receive a free beverage coupon for the Festival and exhibiting artists will offer special discounts to shoppers wearing their Race numbers. The Race itself will run until 11:30 a.m.
