18th annual Creating Change conference Nov. 9-13

By Dawn Wolfe Gutterman

OAKLAND, Ca. – Creating Change, the annual conference sponsored by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, will be held Nov. 9-13 in Oakland, California.
Once again, Triangle Foundation will be taking a large delegation to Creating Change. Unlike last year, when cheap air fares allowed Triangle to get fifty people to the event, this year twenty five delegates will attend according to Triangle Director of Development Kevin McAlpine.
"I think our entire staff and most of our board" will be attending, said Triangle Director of Policy Sean Kosofsky.
"Creating Change is a priceless opportunity to network and see old friends, meet new colleagues and develop skills that we can bring home," said Kosofsky.
Plenary speakers for this year's conference include NGLTF Executive Director Matt Foreman, Loraine Hutchins, co-editor of "Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out," and Urvashi Vaid, executive director of the Arcus Foundation.
This year's pre-conference institutes on Nov. 9 & 10 will include the "People of Color Institute," "Naming Our Destiny: Building Power in Communities of Color," "The Marriage Movement: Fully Engaged!" and "Working with Labor Unions."
Childcare and a family event will also be part of this year's conference. Also, for the first time at Creating Change, young attendees under the age of twenty-four will be able to devise their own conference program. Topics will change hourly during this participant-driven, facilitated and youth-led portion of the conference.
In addition to the workshops, special events, and networking opportunities, on Sunday, Nov. 13, Creating Change participants will have the opportunity to canvass door-to-door in opposition to proposed amendments to the California constitution to bar equal marriage rights and take away existing domestic partner rights in that state.
