Memorial set to honor civic leader Maryann Mahaffey

DETROIT Former Detroit City Council President Maryann Mahaffey will be remembered during a public memorial, set for 2 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Detroit Opera House.
Mahaffey, who served on the City Council for 31 years and was known as an advocate for the disenfranchised and for her dedication to improving the quality of life in the city, died July 27. She was 81.
First elected to City Council in 1973, Mahaffey was a vocal ally of the city's LGBT community. She supported awarding domestic partner benefits to gay and lesbian employees in the city, and in 2001 she grilled Detroit police officers involved in a sting operation that targeted gay men in Rouge Park.
Mahaffey retired last year after being found to have chronic, non-fatal T-cell leukemia. A cause of death wasn't released.
