McMillin wants to bring his 'leadership' to Michigan's schools

By Dawn Wolfe Gutterman

A man who once treated voters to graphic descriptions of abortion, and who home-schooled his own daughter, wants to have a say about what your children learn in school.
In what can only be called a crime against common sense, Tom McMillin is running for State Board of Education.
And what kind of educational policies can we expect from a man who is so famous for his fear of gays, as Jack Lessenberry recently reported, that L. Brooks Patterson "once famously gave him a kiss to make fun of his obsession?" (LINK QUOTED TEXT TO: http://www.metrotimes.com/editorial/story.asp?id=9609)
If you think such a man would get behind proposed anti-bullying legislation that includes protections for LGBT students, you need to think again.
In addition to being virulently anti-gay, though, McMillin also brings special anti-choice street cred to his run for the Board of Education seat. In 2003, for example, The Associated Press reported that McMillin spent $1,000 of his own money to mail postcards "bearing a graphic description of an abortion procedure and diagrams of an abortion in progress," to voters in an effort to target two Democratic state legislators. "This is an issue that will oust Democrats, but not if the Republicans are going to be a bunch of squishes about it," McMillin reportedly told the Detroit News.
One can only wonder what McMillin would call parents who dare question "abstinence-only" sex ed. Who knows? Perhaps he'd even insist that those postcards be used in class; after all, he paid good money for them.
Of course, none of McMillan's work on behalf of religious extremist causes is listed on his Web site, which seeks to brand him "A Leader for Michigan's Students."
Fortunately, BTL can recommend easily recommend alternatives to McMillin's brand of "leadership":
— Cassandra E. Ulbrich, a Democrat from Rochester Hills
— Kevin Anthony Carey, the Green Party of Michigan candidate from Detroit
— Incumbent Democratic candidate Reginald Turner of Detroit
BTL feels that any of the above candidates would be a far better choice than McMillin for either of the two open seats. Of course, we feel that way about Mickey Mouse, too.
BTL Bottom Line: A vote against Tom McMillin is a vote for Michigan's kids.
