Gov. Gretchen Whitmer addressed the State of Michigan after a plan to kidnap her and other Michigan government officials was thwarted by state and federal law enforcement agencies. She started by saying thank you to law enforcement and FBI agents who participated in stopping this [...]
I take serious issue with your endorsement of Debbie Stabenow for U.S. Senate. It’s a well known fact among political activists that Stabenow voted to pass the Military Commissions Act of 2006 (MCA). Both houses of Congress passed the bill, with the support of about a dozen Democrats voting in lockstep with Republicans.
Under the MCA, President Bush can label prisoners “enemy combatants”, and then detain them indefinitely, without access to challenge their detention in court, and they can be subjected to torture interrogation. Prisoners are forbidden from invoking the Geneva Conventions as a source of rights during military commission trials, if our government chooses to give them a trial at all. Defendants have no right to see all the evidence against them, and statements forced out of defendants or other prisoners by torture can be entered as evidence. Trials can be carried out without the defendant present.
It’s an alarming trend in the national mainstream media that all the juicy details of the Mark Foley scandal are being reported with little or no mention of the MCA, and BTL is no exception based on your October 5th issue’s editorial pages.
Your voter guide tells us to vote for Democrats in over 95 percent of races. Is an abscence of open contempt for gay people sufficient in securing an endorsement from BTL? Millions of people all over the state and the country are deeply disturbed by unjust war, torture, and spying. Which Democratic candidates support these illegal and immoral government policies? Conscious conviction in belief of human rights for all people demands that you retract your endorsement of Stabenow. I know there is a Green party candidate, David Soul, running against her. Silence in the face of these outrages is complicity.
