Workshop to enhance parenting skills to be held

ANN ARBOR – A workshop geared toward same-sex parents looking to improve their parenting skills will be at 3 p.m. Oct. 22 and Oct. 29 at WRAP Resource Center in Ann Arbor.
"My personal goal is to manifest something that is needed in our community that's been done in bits and pieces," said Eric Schwan, organizer of Our Community Parenting Enhancement Training.
The workshop will encourage growth and development for gay and lesbian parents. Before creating the program, Schwan noticed a great deal of support for heterosexual families through workshops and books, but not much for same-sex parents. When he questioned family agencies they seemed reluctant to starting same-sex parent programs.
"There wasn't a willingness to do any customizing or changing in their workshops or their avenues that was geared specifically toward same gendered families," he said.
Although Schwan believes we face political and governmental challenges, it's a battle he hopes we continue to fight.
"We must continue to manifest our avenues for safe, healthy and loving families," he said.
