Pacifica Quartet performs as part of special series

The prize-winning Pacifica Quartet will bring its virtuosity and exuberant performance style to Metro Detroit at 8 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Seligman Performing Arts Center. The Quartet will perform as part of Chamber Music Society of Detroit's 63rd season of the Opus 9 Series.
Described recently in Gramophone magazine as "one of the finest and most energetic quartets of the younger generation," the Pacifica Quartet consists of first violinist Simin Ganatra, cellist Brandon Vamos, violinist Sibbi Bernhardsson and violist Masumi Rostad. Since first coming together in 1994, the Pacifica Quartet has swept top prizes in several leading international competitions. The musicians tour extensively throughout the United States, Europe and the Far East.
They recently released "Declarations: Music Between the Wars," showcasing music composed by LeoÔøΩ JanaÔøΩek, Paul Hindemith, and America's Ruth Crawford Seeger during the turbulent 1920s and 1930s. The Quartet's earlier recordings of the complete string quartets of Felix Mendelssohn have been widely praised by critics in the United States and abroad.
The Pacifica Quartet serves as Faculty Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana and is Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Chicago, where it is the first resident ensemble in the history of the institution. Reflecting its dedication to musicians and music lovers of the next generation, the Pacifica Quartet was instrumental in creating the Music Integration Project, an innovative program that provides musical performances and teacher training to inner-city elementary schools. In addition, the Quartet regularly teaches and performs at summer festivals and is frequently invited for visiting residencies at universities and schools nationwide.
Single concert tickets are available now and priced from $41 to $75, students $25. Single tickets for all 2006-2007 concerts and subscriptions may be purchased by calling the Chamber Music Society of Detroit Ticket Service at (248) 855-6070.
