Orchestra Canton presents the season finale of their 2006-2007 “Classical Canton” season, under award-winning Plymouth Canton Symphony Society Music Director and Conductor Nan Washburn, with “Sunday Serenade” on April 1, at 4 p.m. at the Village Theater at Cherry Hill.
A Sunday afternoon performance of beloved classics begins with Franz Schubert’s lively SYMPHONY No. 6 “In C Major”. Elegant, poignant and with beautifully sculpted phrases throughout, this symphony is a masterpiece in every sense and truly an aural feast for the audience. Also in the the program is Lullaby for strings, composed by American great, George Gershwin, early in his career in 1919. More “classical” in nature than most of his music, this charming and gentle piece revels an innocence and perhaps a softer side of this young, soon-to-be famous Broadway, film and jazz composer. Tuneful, lighthearted and fun-filled, the Pulcinella Suite by twentieth century great, Igor Stravinsky, is a delightful showcase for the virtuoso and musical talents of Orchestra Canton. While many of the themes and melodies were actually older eighteenth century pieces “borrowed” for the original ballet score, Stravinsky non-the-less made the work his own by adding his unique rhythmic flare, the richness of his legendary orchestration talents along with his wit and humor. Rounding out the program, PCSS Youth Artist Competition Junior Division winner, pianist Alim Leung, will join the orchestra in performing the first movement from the Piano concerto No. 13, K. 415 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Orchestra Canton tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, and $10 for children.
