Professional Theater News from Around Town:
DETROIT – On March 23, The University of Detroit Mercy Theatre Company and Marygrove College will open their co-production of the popular Broadway musical “Urinetown,” directed by Greg Trask featuring UDM and Marygrove students and guest artists Courtney Burkett (Penelope Pennywise), Elise Hodzen (Little Becky Two Shoes), Angela Kane (Senator Fipp), B.J. Love (Caldwell Cladwell) and Brian Thibault (Officer Lockstock).
“Urinetown” is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year draught, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, “Urinetown” is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny.
“Urinetown” runs Friday March 23 at 8 p.m., Saturday March 24 at 8 p.m., Sunday March 24 at 2 p.m., Friday March 30 at 8 p.m., Saturday March 31 at 8 p.m. and Sunday April 1 at 2 p.m.
The Theatre Company’s performances are held at Marygrove College Theatre, 8425 W. McNichols Rd., in Northwest Detroit.
The box office is located in Reno Hall on the University of Detroit Mercy campus.
