CMU YAF retracts attack video against GSA member

MT. PLEASANT– The Central Michigan Univeristy Young Americans for Freedom chapter here has removed its "exclusive" video which they claimed showed a Gay Straight Alliance member chalking in the location where the antigay chalkings appeared on Monday.

In a letter posted shortly after midnight on the website of The Central Michigan Monitor, Jason Gillman, Jr. the Second Vice President of YAF at CMU, writes "As many of you are aware, a video and accompanying article were posted by an individual insinuating that the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) might have been responsible for chalking the offensive anti-homosexual remarks in the Anspach-Pearce courtyard. The video and article were produced in a way that clearly attempted to push this agenda."

"As a result, being the administrator of this site and after consulting with other members of the E-Board of YAF, I have decided to take the article down and issue this statement and issue an apology," Gillman continued.

Gillman's posted apology and letter contradict the comments made just two days earlier by former CMU YAF president Dennis Lennox. Lennox told BTL that the article in no way accused CMU GSA member Kent Malosh of being responsible for the antigay chalkings.

The letter, retraction and apology all come on the heels of increasing pressure on the CMU group. The CMU Student House plans to take up a resolution passed by the Student Senate on Monday. The resolution would condemn YAF as a hate group. The student governing body will take up the resolution in a 7 p.m. meeting at CMU.

The Senate's action was applauded by the Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project Deputy Director Heidi Beirich who called the resolution "courageous."
