Fun-raising' events will help fund second Kalamazoo Pride

By Shaun Hittle

Looking for some sweet ways to show support to the Southwest Michigan LGBT community? The Kalamazoo Gay and Lesbian Resource Center is sponsoring two events designed to raise funds for the second annual Kalamazoo Pride on June 14.
This weekend, KGLRC is sponsoring a Mardi Gras Drag Show at The Zoo Bar in Kalamazoo from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., and is planning a Costume Ball to be held at the Radisson Plaza Hotel on March 29.
Event organizer Aaron Murphy came up with the dress-donning events to unite those in the LGBT community – and because he and "most of my friends love dressing up and looking good for the clubs."
Admission to the Drag Show will be $5 at the door, and tickets to the Costume Ball are $15 per person or $25 per couple. Both events will feature raffles and live entertainment. Tickets for the Costume Ball can be purchased online at http://www.kglrc.org/pride/ball.
All proceeds will go toward Kalamazoo Pride 2008. Last year Kalamazoo held its first Pride, and this year the event will move to a larger location, the Arcadia Creek Festival site, said organizer Alison Strasser.
Strasser described the planned Pride event as a "big party" designed to foster communication and support between the LGBT community and the general Kalamazoo community. "It will be a casual, fun event. Just hang out together and enjoy a summer afternoon," Strasser said. "(Kalamazoo Pride) will celebrate the diversity of Kalamazoo."
