The Michigan Department of Community Health estimated in 2006 that 18,000 people in Michigan are living with HIV and that another 3,000 or so are living with the disease and unaware of their status.
June 27 is National HIV Testing Day and Michigan has been building up to the day with events all over the state. Picnics, health fairs, parties and outreaches have aimed at raising awareness of the need for HIV testing.
But HIV Testing Day is just one day out of the year, and many organizations offer free testing year round that is confidential, quick and free of judgment.
Here's a list of some of the places in Michigan that offer free HIV testing. For more information, and to find local testing sites, visit www.hivtest.org.
