Princesses of (Pop) Power

Chris Azzopardi

Lesbians lust over them – and to that, they say, "Bring 'em on" – and gay guys lust while listening to them, but we all win in the world of Pussycat Dolls. And "world" isn't an understatement: They're taking it over – with the help of their queers – with the release of "Doll Domination" earlier this week, and with a tour beginning in January. Just after a Today Show interview, Ashley Roberts, the hot long-haired blond one, gushes over the girl-power group's gays, addresses the movie rumors and tells us about her boobs – and don't cha wanna know about those?

I've been listening to 'When I Grow Up' for weeks now – ever since it leaked on the Internet. Has anyone else said to you that the lyric, "I want to have groupies," sounds remarkably like, "I want to have boobies"?
I think it's the number one question in every interview we do (laughs). Seriously, everybody thinks that … Plus the choreography, we're like pumping – which doesn't help (laughs).

Well, it'd make sense in the song because you're talking about when you grow up – and girls want boobies.
I definitely wanted to have at least a handful (laughs).

Do you have at least a handful now?
Yeah, I have a handful. I'm pretty satisfied. I definitely don't need to go under the knife or anything. I'm satisfied with my naturals.

As a gay man, I don't have much interest in boobs, but –
You don't?! (sarcastic laugh)

Not really, no. But lots of gay men love you.
Oh, yay!

What should the gays expect from "Doll Domination"?
The cool thing about 'Doll Domination' is there's a lot of different stuff to choose from – like when you're having a down day and you're going through, ya know, something with your man and you're feeling like, 'Ah, what's going on?' We have like these really great ballads that kind of pick you back up or (help you) feel like somebody else understands what you're going through – um, which I don't think people would really expect from us. So it's kind of cool. And then, of course, we've got our dance tracks and stuff that everybody will hopefully be booty-bopping to in the club.

How did you guys pick the album title?
Ya know, actually it was something when we were overseas in Europe that our European fans were like (in European accent), 'Doll domination!' Like they'd write it as an article title and it kind of stuck with us; like we'd always say, 'Ya, we're coming over, taking over the world – yeah, doll domination!'

It's kind of a daunting task, though, don't you think – global domination?
Ya know what? We're so blessed, man, because we go all over the world and people know the songs and they sing the lyrics to our songs and we have just had such worldwide success that we're very lucky. And hopefully the fans still wanna hear more of us and will by the album … so it's a lot of work but it's worth it.

Other than dominating the radio as you have with the first single, is there anything else you'd like to dominate – besides that and the world?
(Laughs) Well, I got to do a small role in a movie that comes out this fall called 'Make it Happen,' and I'd love to pursue more of that – do the acting stuff – 'cause it's fun.

Now, what's this about a Pussycat Dolls movie?
I know! We've been asked that today. I don't know; I mean it's definitely something that we've put out there, that we'd love to do a movie musical or Bollywood film. But, um, nothing is quite set in stone yet, so I'm not sure what everybody's talking about.

It just must be rumors, then?
Well, hopefully it'll be true (laughs) – but for right now, we don't know anything about it.

And you've got enough going on with the album, I'm sure?
Yeah. But I'm sure we could squeeze in a movie if need be (laughs).

What was it like working with Timbaland?
I've been such a huge fan of him when – back in the day with Brandy and Aaliyah and just kind of – he's at the height of his game right now, and for him to want to work with us, it was huge. He's a genius, and he did some amazing tracks on the album, and I think people are really gonna love 'em.

How do you feel about all the gay love?
Oh my gosh, you know, I've had so many gay friends growing up – one of my best friends being gay – I just, I love it. I just feel like they get it, and whenever we perform for a gay audience, it's like the energy in the house or the auditorium or wherever it may be that we're performing – it's just so intense. And you just wanna give them your all because they're just so into the music and so into what we're doing, and so open-minded to us. We love our gay fans.

Why do you think you've been such a big hit in the gay community?
I think that maybe dealing with judgment growing up with just society and finally it's evolving – but I feel like they're like, 'We just wanna have fun. We just want people to accept us and love us,' and I feel like that's (where) we're at, ya know, we just want people to accept us and love us and come to our shows and have fun and get enthralled in our performance – and our gay community does that. They're just there to have fun and chant our lyrics and enjoy our costumes and whatever it may be.

Yeah, which we love.
Yeah, it makes sense. We can feel the love.

And I have to say, I'm sure that the lesbians love the costumes, too. How do you feel about that?
(High-pitched laugh) Hey, bring 'em on! We did a show for Dinah Shore a couple of years ago, and it was so funny because my mom rides Harleys. And she showed up with, like, her Harley jacket on and all the girls were checking her out. I'm like, 'Oh, this is crazy.'

Your mom is straight?
Yeah, she's straight, but she wasn't minding the attention (laughs).

What was your favorite doll when you were growing up?
It was Barbie. I loved Barbies. I mean, My Little Ponies were my favorite, but as far as dolls. I love My Little Ponies, I'd braid their hair and give them little outfits and stuff but –

Did you have the Dream House?
Dude, yeah. Actually my favorite doll ever was She-Ra. Yeah – She-Ra: Princess of Power. I had her pink castle that had a little elevator. I thought she was cool, 'cause she could like kick butt, too.

Did you used to do naughty things with your Barbie and Ken?
(Laughs) I did! I totally did. My mom caught me one time, she's like, 'Why do you have all the clothes off your dolls?' I'm like, 'They're playing!'
