What to Watch: Project Runway

Chris Azzopardi

We already know J. Lo bailed on season five's finale of "Project Runway," which aired last night and wraps at 9 p.m. Oct 15 on Bravo. But what don't we know? We went to Chris Webb, the out GM exterior-color and trend designer, who was there behind-the-scenes. And while he couldn't say much because Bravo probably would've run him over with one of GM's own vehicles, he did mention a favorite – Leanne! – when the remaining few rolled out their collections.
"(It) was absolutely superb," he told us just minutes after watching the filming of the finale, which Entertainment Weekly revealed will feature last year's winner, Christian Siriano, at a packed Bryant Park in New York City.
The day after we spoke with him, he was off to watch each of the designers being filmed as if they were walking away with the grand prize in the reality fashion-war show: a 2009 Saturn Vue Hybrid.
Since season one debuted in 2004, the Saturn division's been a sponsor of the gay-popular fashionista program, where designers use unconventional items to create trendy clothes – but car parts?
"Saturn has been trying to start a project with them, and Bravo was quite resistant and didn't understand how the automotive industry could play a role in this and everything else," Webb says. "But obviously, after (several) seasons … I think it made more sense to them that we do have more materials within the vehicles that could be used for garment construction."
And so Webb flew to NYC from Michigan earlier in the season to film the episode "Fashion Drives You," which had contestants pulling apart Saturn vehicles, taking seat belts and carburetors, to design clothes.
"It was madness," he says, mentioning that the designers broke at least 100 needles in 12 hours trying to alter the materials. "It was pretty intense."
And though this season hasn't been a fan favorite, the finale is likely to be just as intense. Aren't you sew excited?
