DETROIT –
Women poets will make their pilgrimage back to the Motor City for three days of competition March 18-21 at the second annual Women of the World Poetry Slam Championship. As a prelude, several Girls Aloud! fundraisers will take place across the metro Detroit area in efforts to raise money in support of the festival. With Girls Aloud! heading the efforts, WOWps hopes to bring their poetry to more attendees of the slam competition.
The fundraiser will be held 7 p.m. Feb 21 at 1515 Broadway Theater in Detroit. It will feature performances from several poets, including Aricka “Epiphany” Foreman, Domonique “Poetic Blues” Baul, Christina Archer, Traci Currie and Karrie Waarla. A musical performance will be put on by the band Blair and the Boyfriends.
Girls Aloud! is the theme for the poetry slam event, and is meant to celebrate powerhouse female performance poets as well as women of all races and backgrounds through the beauty of collective voices. The parent company of the event, Poetry Slam, Incorporated, intends to make WOWps a unique showcase event that supports women by helping to provide childcare, scholarships and subsidies for attendance, and by creating a supportive atmosphere during the event.
