Genesee PFLAG hosts film series

By Jim Larkin

FLINT – Ever been to a thought-provoking movie and wished there was someone to discuss it with afterward? Yeah, Genesee County PFLAG knows the feeling. That's one of the reasons the county chapter is holding its Final Friday Filmfest Discussion Series.
It continues at 7 p.m. May 29 with the showing of "Better Than Chocolate" at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Flint, 2474 S. Ballenger Highway. Refreshments, discussion and a 50/50 drawing will follow the film, which is closed-captioned.

"Genesee County PFLAG's intent is to reach out to the community and open up a dialogue about LGBT issues through the use of film," said Terri Dinsmore, Genesee County PFLAG vice president. "We invite everyone to join us for these enlightening evenings."
The group's first film was "Milk" in April. Upcoming films include "The Laramie Project" in June, followed by a discussion on hate crimes and hate crime legislation. The discussion in July will be on the country's military "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy with a related film.
There is no cover charge for the films, although a freewill offering is collected to help cover expenses.
Genesee County PFLAG President Allen Biles said the series was designed to give Flint area residents, from college age through senior citizens, a cheap way to enjoy a night out while also opening up dialogue on issues relevant to the LGBT community. "We wanted to do it as an outreach to the community," Biles said. "With the economy the way it is, we thought it would be a cheap night out in a safe environment – a place where you could take your sweetie or go by yourself if you're single. It's a way to get out and meet other people, without going to a bar."
