Community artist and Between The Lines Parting Glances columnist Charles Alexander has been elected to the board of directors of the prestigeous Scarab Club for artists, photographers, sculptors, poets, musicians, patrons and art supporters.
Last week, Alexander also won the first place prize of $300 in the Club's "Blooms, Bugs, Beasts" annual art exhibit, officially opening to the public 6-9 p.m. June 5.
Alexander, a Scarab Club member since 2001, has exhibited in a dozen or more juried SC exhibits, had three solo shows in its second-floor gallery, and is a past Silver Medal winner.
"The Scarab Club welcomes, fully encourages diversity in its membership," said Alexander. "The club's exhibited the work of many gay and lesbian artists, is 'gay friendly,' and its sequestered garden and main art gallery have been romantic settings for many rainbow commitment celebrations. The club's also ideal for nurturing beginning and advanced talent through weekly classes, monthly juried shows, and it provides opportunities for meeting top creative talents and viewing cutting-edge work."
Alexander also serves as curator to the Affirmations Pittmann-Puckett Art Gallery.
The Scarab Club celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2007. The second-floor gallery features ceiling beams signed by famous names such as Diego Rivera, Norman Rockwell, pianist Van Cliburn, and Joan Mondale.
