Acclaimed Michigan-based playwright Kim Carney and the gang at Who Wants Cake? will team up for a one-night-only reading of her newest play. “Elizabeth the Beautiful” tackles the issues of beauty, fame, and celebrity as told through the ravishing mega-celebrity Elizabeth Taylor. The one-time reading will take place at 8 p.m. Jan. 29 at The Ringwald Theatre, 22742 Woodward Ave, Ferndale. Reservations are not needed. Admission is free.
“Elizabeth the Beautiful” is the story of the many loves of screen legend Elizabeth Taylor, and the significance (or insignificance) her great beauty had in her life. The reading stars Joe Bailey as Elizabeth, Jamie Richards as Richard Burton and Joe Plambeck as everybody else.
Carney is an award-winning playwright whose work has appeared throughout Michigan, as well as in New York and California. Her newest play, “Geoffrey & Jeffrey,” was recently produced at the Performance Network in Ann Arbor. Other Michigan productions include “Labor Day,” “Only Me and You” and “Nooner” at The Purple Rose Theatre, “Photographic Memories” (at the Boarshead/Michigan Public Theatre, and at the Baldwin Theatre in Royal Oak), “Bombshells” (also at the Boarshead, as well as University of Detroit’s Theatre Company), “Life Is A Beach” (Millenium Theatre), “I Love Christmas” (1515 Broadway) and “Lib” (Planet Ant). A graduate of Wayne State University’s theater department, Carney received its 1998 Alumni Achievement Award.
