Spring is an amazing time of year. Sure, there are those of us with our seed-starters and "clean-up" tools. But the real excitement starts when those Harley engines come to life!
The first formal appearance of the Dykes on Bikes came in 1976, at the San Francisco Pride Parade, where the riders were placed first – since motorcycles don't always run reliably at the walking pace of the rest of the parade.
In March 2008,
Dykes on Bikes authorized the first chapter in the Detroit metropolitan community. Their mission: to support philanthropic endeavors in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and women's communities and beyond, and reach out to empower a community of diverse women through rides, charity events, Pride events and education.
According to Sharon, from Metro Detroit, "I was initially drawn to the Detroit Chapter of Dykes on Bikes to align myself with the rich history of women motorcyclists. I've since found a wonderful and supportive network of community-conscious women who share a passion not only for riding motorcycles, but also as volunteers and fundraisers for local charities.
Wendy from Eastpointe adds, "I truly enjoy riding my motorcycle, but it gets lonely. I joined Dykes on Bikes to meet other lesbian riders and make new friends to hang out and ride with. Dykes on Bikes welcomed me with open arms, and it's been a great ride ever since. I believe our club represents our community proudly – plus we have the coolest motorcycle club patch".
Currently there are about a dozen "patch holding members" in the local chapter – with additional associate members and non-member supporters – ranging in age, background and interest. They come from all over the Detroit metropolitan area, including Warren, Ann Arbor, Dearborn Heights, Garden City, Ypsilanti and Ferndale.
Once a month, beginning in March/April (weather permitting) there is a club ride, generally in Michigan. This allows all members to be active, including those who have full-time commitments, and to ride without having to miss work or hire a babysitter. The "riding season" generally ends in October/November.
Meetings continue throughout the winter months, with an annual holiday party, and there are always motorcycle shows and swap meets. The club also sponsors the Dearborn Animal Shelter, the Southeast Michigan Dyke March and Equality Now. In June they will be volunteering for the Dyke March.
