MHS to host "Protect-A-Pet" clinics

In times of financial hardship and scarce resources, companion animals are often affected and sometimes even forgotten. To help those in need continue to provide proper care and protection to the furry members of their family, the Michigan Humane Society is holding its 20th annual series of "Protect-A-Pet" clinics to assist pet guardians who demonstrate low-income status.
The clinics will be held in various locations throughout Hazel Park and Detroit, allowing healthy dogs and cats over six weeks of age to receive low-cost vaccinations and microchipping.
This year's clinics are also being brought to the community in part by the Build-a-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation. The foundation works to make life more bearable for children, families and pets in need of a helping hand. They donate proceeds to local animal shelters, stray pet rescue and rehabilitation organizations, and pet education programs throughout the country.
Since the program's inception in 1991, the "Protect-A-Pet" clinics have assisted dog and cat guardians by providing age-appropriate vaccinations protecting against distemper, parvovirus, rabies and other deadly diseases. Over the last 20 years, the clinics have provided more than 53,000 companion animals with life-saving vaccinations.
The clinics will operate from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on the following dates:
March 27, DPW Yard, Hazel Park (also open to Ferndale residents)
April 24, Palmer Park, Detroit
May 15, Clark Park, Detroit
June 19, Balduck Park, Detroit
July 24, Canine to Five, 3443 Cass Ave., Detroit
The clinics will require a fee of $3 per vaccination.
To ensure that the clinics are utilized by those in greatest need, pet owners are required to present proof of low income. One of the following must be presented in order to qualify to receive services:
. Proof of unemployment compensation
. SOM Medicaid or Medical Assistance card
. FIP (Family Independence Program)
. Social Security Disability
. Food Stamps/Bridge Card
. WIC
Low-cost microchipping will also be available at the clinics for a fee of $10, as well as information regarding low-cost spay/neuter programs. Microchipping helps owners who lose their pets find them again.
Services will be limited to 800 animals per clinic. All animals must be on leashes or in carriers, and payment will be accepted in the form of cash or check only.
