A Rhinestone Rodeo

Hundreds of metro Detroiters will kick up their cowboy (and girl) boots for a one-of-a-kind experience at Affirmations' 11th annual Big Bash. This year's event – dubbed the Rhinestone Rodeo – is set to take place 6 p.m.-midnight March 27 at Bert's Warehouse Theatre, located in Detroit's historic Eastern Market district.
The event will include country line dancing lessons during the reception, dinner, raffles, giveaways, plus live and silent auctions. Live entertainment will be provided by Sinjon Smith, a country rock band from the Detroit area.
Traditionally, the Big Bash, an annual fundraiser for Affirmations LGBT community center in Ferndale, is black-tie optional and encourages the community to dress in their best. This year, they're taking a different route. In contrast to past events, the 2010 Big Bash marks the first time attendees are encouraged to wear denim and Western-themed attire, including 10-gallon hats, leather boots and maybe even a few pairs of chaps. Oversized belt buckles are also encouraged.

"A lot of guests have been buzzing about the country western clothing they plan to wear at the event," says Carrie Copeland, Affirmations' special events manager. "It's going to be fun to see guests really get into the theme of Rhinestone Rodeo."
Attendees were even encouraged to stop in to Scott Colburn's Books and Western Wear in Livonia on March 22 to stock up on embroidered shirts and Wrangler jeans. Those who missed out on the event, which donated 10 percent of all sales to Affirmations, can still participate – especially if they haven't gotten their costume yet. A mention of Affirmations at the check-out counter any time until the Big Bash will assure that the same donation is made as part of that purchase, helping fund the center's continuous programming.
Serving over 50,000 community members annually, Affirmations provides vital programs and services to southeast Michigan's LGBT community. The funds raised at the Big Bash allow Affirmations to continue providing support, education and a safe space. "This event is really a great way to have fun while helping to support an important cause," says Copeland.
Tickets for the Rhinestone Rodeo are $175 each, or $250 for a VIP ticket, which includes a pre-event reception and recognition at the event. For more information about tickets or sponsorship, contact Carrie Copeland at 248-398-7105. To purchase tickets, visit http://www.thebigbash.org.
