Metro Detroiters: 'Step Inside The Box'

ROYAL OAK –
Back in September 2009, we called Step Inside The Box, the first of its kind, "a scene out of Andy Warhol's factory parties." On Feb. 19 the event returns to ZMC Pharmacy in Royal Oak, where artists, food aficionados and Steppin' Out supporters will gather and try to outdo themselves.
The event is hosted by HIV/AIDS non-profit Steppin' Out, which has been holding their annual AIDS Walk Detroit in Royal Oak for over 20 years.
Expect some great dance club music from a live DJ and a spectacular sunset view of Royal Oak and Detroit. The event is held on the third floor of the pharmacy. Steppin' Out Board President Bill Thomas explained that the building used to serve as a car dealership in the early 1900s. The space features almost wall-to-wall windows.
Step Inside The Box features black shoeboxes decorated and filled with goodies by local and national businesses and notables, all up for auction.
The first event drew in an estimated 200 people and raised over $10,000 for Steppin' Out, which provides financial support to direct care HIV/AIDS services and education in the metro Detroit area. It's a signature event for the organization, Thomas told us in 2009.
In a recent e-mail, he also said, "The evening will include a 'Taste of Royal Oak' and a complimentary bar and valet parking. Each ticket is $50 and trust me, this event is not a stuffy and boring fundraiser. It is full of interesting auction items, cool music and great food!"
