Youth summit June 11-12

DETROIT-
KICK, The Agency for LGBT African-Americans, is sponsoring a youth summit on June 11-12 at the Ruth Ellis Center. Registration and continental breakfast begins at 9:30 a.m. with the opening session at 11:00 a.m. Lunch is provided and the entrance is free. Pre-registration is encouraged. Youth aged 13-25 are welcome.
The theme for the 2011 Youth Summit is "Recognize! Realize! Believe! Because We Are Worth It!" Attendees will be able to network and discuss issues, construct plans of action with regard to the community, and continue the groundwork that was laid during past Healing Detroit summits.
"We have a distinct opportunity to help our young people feel a part of and connected to the community," said John A. Trimble, community activist and summit coordinator. "The best ways for them to feel a connection is by having them at the table, listen to their thoughts, and give them the chance to contribute. Healing Detroit represents that chance."
"I remember being the same age as some of these young people. I remember wanting to validate my existence by interacting with others like me. I wanted to craft my identity based upon those interactions," said Tiffany McLean, KICK board president. "I hope the youth summit will be a gateway to that for any young person who comes."
