The "tranny" movie that the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation tried to get banned from New York's Tribeca Film Festival airs on Showtime throughout July.
The network says of the film, Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives, "A group of vengeful 'trannies' learn martial arts and seek bone-crushing revenge on the dim-witted thugs that assaulted one of their own in this violent, gleefully trashy homage to 1970s exploitation flicks."
GLAAD campaigned against the movie in early 2010, demanding that it "be pulled" from Tribeca's lineup.
"The film, its title and its marketing misrepresent the lives of transgender women and use grotesque, exploitative depictions of violence against transgender women in ways that make light of the horrific brutality they all too often face," the organization said.
"GLAAD has reached out to writer/director Israel Luna, the film's producer and the Tribeca Film Festival, and both have refused to take responsibility for the problematic content and offensive marketing of this film. We urge you to contact the Tribeca Film Festival and call on them to pull Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives from their schedule."
Tribeca refused to disinvite the film, and Luna, who is gay, fought back with a vicious YouTube parody of GLAAD.
Village Voice columnist Michael Musto called the movie's characters "funny, tart-tongued, and caring … breasty and well-accessorized."
"I adored them," he said.
