Affirmations Community Center and Equality Michigan have spent the last several months mobilizing pro-LGBT communities in southeastern Michigan, fostering civic engagement and building momentum crucial for the upcoming election. On Saturday, Oct. 13 beginning at noon, Affirmations will host a town hall event and training for neighborhood canvassing from 2 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. The event will feature President of the Metro Detroit AFL-CIO, Chris Michalakis and Engage Michigan Chair, Jocelyn Benson. Lunch and snacks will be provided.
The project focuses on voter outreach, education and engagement through phone-banking, canvassing and Get Out The Vote efforts. In several cities throughout Michigan, battles are being fought to draft and modify non-discrimination ordinances, which currently do not protect LGBT people.
“We didn’t know what to anticipate when starting out,” says Megh Hollowell, program coordinator at Affirmations. “But the response from the community has been overwhelming and telling. The consensus among voters is clear: We are not an interest group. We are citizens, entitled to all of the same rights and protections under the law, and it’s time for change.”
In addition to the upcoming Town Hall event, phone banking sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Affirmations through the general election in early November.
