ANN ARBOR – The Jim Toy Community Center will host a rally in Ann Arbor on the day the U.S. Supreme Court announces its decision in the two marriage equality cases it is currently considering.
The rally will take place in Braun Court, off North Fourth Avenue, between Catherine Street and East Kingsley Street, at 4 p.m. that day in response to the Court’s ruling in the Windsor v. the United States, which challenges the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, and Hollingsworth v. Perry, which surrounds the legality of California’s Proposition 8 that banned the state from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
“We hope the Supreme Court will rule in favor of equality and justice,” Jim Toy Center President Sandi Smith said. “If so, our rally will celebrate a great step forward for this country.”
Smith, a former Ann Arbor City Council member, notes than in 14 previous cases the Court has ruled that marriage is a fundamental right that the government should not restrict.
