TROY – Ousted Troy Mayor Janice Daniels is back in the political ring, this time running for Troy city council. Daniels was recalled in November 2012 after bringing the city into the national limelight by famously posting on Facebook, "I think I am going to throw away my 'I Love New York' carrying bag now that queers can get married there."
The group Recall Janice Daniels listed several reasons why the Tea Party Republican was unfit to be their mayor. Among them, in an awkward attempt to explain her Facebook anti-gay slur, she told a group of students she would "bring in psychiatrists who will tell you that the homosexual lifestyle is dangerous."
The group was also offended by a "position paper" Daniels read at a city council meeting where she avoided council rules and insulted the city manager and staff. Daniels also refused to take an oath of office recognizing the city charter and worked hard to undermine a Multi-Modal Transit Center that had been in the works for over a decade.
Voters removed her from office with 52.2 percent (20,763 votes) in favor of the recall, and 47.8 percent (18,993 votes) opposed.
Now Daniels is back, running for one of three open city council seats in a pool of 11 candidates. The requirement to get on the ballot for Troy city council is only 60 signatures, much fewer than the 9,000 signatures that were gathered to bring the issue of her removal onto the ballot in 2012. Terms last for four years.
She will face incumbents Ed Pennington and Wade Flemming and newcomers Olimpiu Apahidean, Steve Gottlieb, Ellen Hodorek, Thomas Kuhn, Rodger Walters, Scott Welborn, Jim Werpetinski and Neil Yashinsky.
