LGBT Community Center To Offer Alternative High School Program

FERNDALE - Affirmations Community Center is working with Michigan Educational Partnership (MEP) to offer an Alternative High School program beginning this October. Affirmations is currently accepting applications for the 2013-14 school year.
Affirmations' Alternative High School program is designed for committed and motivated students 17 and above, who are interested in earning their high school diploma. Students can take advantage of accessible and effective learning spaces more conducive to their needs.
"We recognize that increasing access to economic opportunity for many in our community begins with getting a high quality basic education," Program Director Johnny Jenkins said, "Affirmations is perfectly positioned to offer such a program in a bully free and non-judgmental environment".
This accredited high school program follows the Michigan Merit curriculum and can be taken at Affirmations or online. All educational courses are rich in multi-media, using animations, simulations, exploration activities, video presentations, online content and vocabulary activities.
"A lot of these kids don't believe they can do it and have fallen through the cracks of traditional high school," said Dave Garcia, Affirmations' executive director. "Here, they get more individualized attention and are instilled with the belief that they can succeed."
Those interested in applying for Affirmations' Alternative High School should contact Mark McMillan, Volunteer and Facilities Manager at [email protected] or call 248-677-7224.
