Ralph Reed, the former head of the Christian Coalition, has endorsed Republican David Trott in his bid to ouster Tea Party Congressman Kerry Bentivolio. Trott’s campaign announced the endorsement Wednesday in an email to supporters. Reed current runs the Faith & Freedom Coalition.
“As a job creator and defender of our Constitution, Dave Trott will be the representation we need in Washington,” said Reed in a press statement. “Dave will get things done and advance the values you and I cherish. I can recommend him to voters who value our faith and our freedom without reservation in Michigan’s 11th Congressional District.”
In the same release, Trott said he was “humbled” to accept Reed’s endorsement.
Trott runs Trott and Trott, a foreclosure mill, and one of the largest foreclosure law firms in the state. He has been a long time supporter of Michigan Republicans, and even hosted former GOP presidential candidate John McCain’s election Michigan campaign headquarters in 2008. Trott has sunk $2.2 million of his own cash into the race, plus loaned his campaign an additional $250,000.
Bentivolio was elected to represent Michigan’s 11th Congressional district two years ago when Thad McCotter failed to gather enough signatures to get on the ballot for re-election. He has been a target from mainstream Republicans after it was discovered the one-time reindeer farmer had trouble determining whether he was really Santa Claus or not. While in office, Bentivolio has grabbed onto conspiracy theories, including claims that airplanes are dumping chemicals on people — the so-called chemtrails conspiracy.
