California Considers Gender Neutral Birth Certificate Language

BTL Staff

CALIFORNIA – The California Senate is considering a bill this week that would make birth certificates more LGBT parent friendly, the East Bay Express reports.

AB 1951, would require the Cali. Department of Public Health to alter the information on a newborn's birth certificate to read "Name of Parent" instead of "Name of Mother" or "Name of Father."

Alongside their name, a parent would then mark the most appropriate box be it "mother," "father," or "parent." Current wording restricts same-sex parents from accurately describing their relationship to the child with some lesbian mothers signing, "Father" and some gay fathers signing as "Mother." Transgender parents often choose gendered language that doesn't match their identity.

The bill was introduced in Feb. by Assembly member Jimmy Gomez and cosponsored by Equality California.
