BREAKING: Dems File Complaint With IRS, State Department Of Treasury Over Land Signs At Charity

LANSING –
The Michigan Democratic Party filed a formal complaint last week with both the IRS and the Michigan Department of Treasury over allegations a charity controlled by Land's family members may have violated nonprofit rules prohibiting involvement in political campaigns.
Between The Lines reported on the situation in September, providing photographic evidence of "Terri Lynn Land for Senate" yard signs available inside the Lansing location of World Mission Thrift Store.
"Ms. Land is, in essence, using her charity as an extension of her campaign," said Kevin McAlister, senior communications advisor for the Michigan Democratic Party, at a press conference Sept. 24 in front of the store in question.
The complaint specifically references the BTL report and provides the BTL photographs.
It is a violation of IRS rules and regulations to intervene in support or opposition of a candidate.
The report came days after the Huffington Post reported on the organization's zealous mission of spreading evangelical Christianity throughout the world, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and southeast Asia. The evangelical mission was criticized by the Arab American News, noting the group's website referred to Jews, Muslims and other faith adherents as "obstacles."
"It is extremely offensive that Terri Lynn Land would see the Muslim community as inferior and an obstacle to be overcome. How does she expect to represent Michigan's diverse communities in Washington when she and her family are getting tax breaks to promote intolerance around the world?" asked Dr. Shahid Tahir, Michigan Muslim Democratic Caucus chair. "Ms. Land's silence about her personal contributions and tax breaks to this divisive charity are unacceptable and wrong. We believe that Michiganders deserve to hear an explanation."
World Mission Executive Director Greg Kelley was not immediately available for comment.
