Man's Enormous Problems Explored In The Whale

Gay playwright Samuel Hunter wrote the award-winning play The Whale, a touching look into the psyche of a gay man after the loss of his lover.

FERNDALE – The University of Detroit-Mercy's 45th theatre season will open with a new artistic partnership with The Ringwald Theatre in Ferndale with Samuel D. Hunter's "The Whale." We will meet Charlie, played by Joe Plambeck, a man mired in grief and personal conflicts surrounding the loss of his male partner, his relationship to his ex-wife and his nearly estranged daughter. Confined to his home due to a physical malady, Charlie reaches out to the people in his life using the tool he knows best: the written word.
Greg Grobis directs this new play, which premiered off Broadway in 2012, which is known for its powerful emotions and unflinching look at one man's descent into self-destruction.
"The Whale" is a raw, emotional piece that reveals someone with great empathy for everyone but himself, with humor, honesty and touching glimpses of human frailty. Big-hearted and fiercely funny, "The Whale" tells the story of a man's last chance at redemption, and of finding beauty in the most unexpected places.
Hunter's "The Whale" is the 2013's winner of the Lucille Lortel Best Play Award, Drama Desk Special Award for Significant Contribution to Theatre, and the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding New York Theatre.
"The Whale" opens Oct. 2 at the Ringwald Theater in Ferndale and runs until the end of the month. Tickets are available http://www.UDMarts.com
