DETROIT – The upcoming annual reunion of fans, friends and family of the '80s nightclubs "Todd's" and "Liedernacht," now better known as City Club, will include a birthday celebration for Todd's creator Stirling and performances by the club's original DJ, DJ Charles English.
Detroiters, 21 and older, who used to frequent Todd's and Lidernacht will have a chance to get together with old friends and family 9 p.m. Dec. 19 at Northern Lights Lounge located in Detroit's New Center. A $6 cover will be asked at the door. A portion of the proceeds will benefit a new local documentary.
A portion of the proceeds will go towards the completion of "AMERICA YOU KILL ME," a feature-length documentary film about the pioneering work and impact of Michigan gay rights activist Jeff Montgomery. The film is in its final stages of production and is scheduled to be released in 2016. Stirling specifically requested that some of the proceeds go towards this important documentary since gay rights was an integral part of Todd's legacy.
Todd's was an eastside gay nightclub that welcomed and transitioned into a new wave/punk dance club two nights a week. Stirling, the club's owner, worked his magic at the old Leland House Hotel and transformed its' upstairs club into the subculture enclave Liedernacht on the weekends. This eclectic club hosted techno pioneer Derek May as a DJ followed by punk Djs on Sundays. The club still remains an underground nightspot today as the City Club and is one of the longest running clubs in the city.
Northern Lights Lounge is located at 660 W. Baltimore in Detroit.
