LGBT Detroit Purchases Building in Northwest Detroit

BY BTL STAFF

DETROIT – LGBT Detroit recently purchased a commercial space on Detroit's northwest side making it the first black LGBT nonprofit in the country to operate within its own space.
"No one has ever done it," Curtis Lipscomb, LGBT Detroit's executive director, told BLAC June 6. "My New York friends are bouncing off the walls. They thought they'd be the first to do it."
LGBT Detroit is expected to make the big move to the new space on Greenfield Road between Seven and Eight Mile over the summer. Lipscomb told BLAC that he hopes to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new space sometime in July, ideally during Hotter Than July, Detroit's Black Gay Pride Festival.
LGBT Detroit currently rents a space on Burroughs Street in Midtown. The Midtown location is convenient but has become too small for the organization's operations. Lipscomb hopes the new area will be ideal due to its proximity to major roads like Eight Mile and the Lodge Freeway. Several bus lines are located nearby as well.
A crowdfunding campaign is in the works to complete renovations on the space. For more information, visit http://LGBTDetroit.org.
