Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter and the city council approved a budget on April 24 that reduces the tax rate in Ferndale – where mostly Democratic voters live – for the second time in three years. Coulter told The Oakland Press on April 19 that they "voted to reduce the tax rate by 1 mill in 2016" and will again reduce city taxes by about $70 for the average homeowner. Coulter credits City Manager April Lynch and other city council members for being politically progressive while also being fiscally responsible.
