UNIFIED HIV Health & Beyond Brings the Fight to the Ball

UNIFIED HIV Health & Beyond began over a decade ago engaging individuals with the otherwise closed ballroom communities. For generations, ball culture has been a place of escape and defiance for young black and Latino gay, bi, and transgender women who were disenfranchised in their communities and kicked out of their homes. It’s with this underground LGBT subculture in mind that UNIFIED HIV Health & Beyond will host its 10th Annual Pride Ball – The Sitcom Edition at 6 p.m. on June 10 at The Magic Stick, 4120 Woodward Ave. in Detroit. The organization is well known for answering calls of the community, and Detroit is long overdue for a nationally recognized ball. This event was originally designed to target high-risk persons within the LGBT community that depend on the family-oriented culture of the ball scene for social support and to assist those in need of medical and non-medical assistance. UNIFIED’s vision is to bring greater visibility and strengthen the relationships with ball scene members to help guide them to obtain optimal health.
