Affirmations celebrates National Coming Out Day with annual speak out

FERNDALE – National Coming Out Day is Saturday, October 11th. It was founded on October 11, 1988 to celebrate the first anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington. It celebrates and commemorates the courage and pride of gay people everywhere in their daily struggles of coming out to family, to friends, to coworkers, and most importantly, to themselves. Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center is celebrating this important day with a full schedule of activities.
"Coming out is an act of bravery, particularly in a society where gays are not afforded equal rights among citizens" states Executive Director Leslie Thompson. "Answering the simple question, 'are you married?' will put a gay or lesbian individual into the position of either lying, hiding, or coming out. Because of this, coming out is a lifelong process."
In collaboration with Eastern Michigan University's LGBT & Friends Alumni Group, Affirmations will be bringing Ruthie and Connie to town. Ruthie and Connie are Ruthie Berman and Connie Kurtz, two 1950's conventional Jewish housewives who fell in love and then struggled with their families, their lives, and society around them. They tell a most inspiring story and have recently been the subject of a new documentary: Ruthie and Connie: Every Room in the House.
For National Coming Out Day, on Saturday, October 11th, Ruthie and Connie will be sharing their inspirational story with Affirmations youth from 1-3 p.m. Aftwards at 3:30 p.m., Ruthie and Connie join Affirmations as it hosts a Speak Out! on the Troy Street Patio. Here community members are welcomed and encouraged to share their coming out stories. Music graciously provided by One Voice Choir. At 7 p.m. that same night Ruthie and Connie: Every Room in the House will be aired at EMU in the McKenney Union Ballroom.
Affirmations invites all those interested to attend and take part in the activities. The mission of Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center is to provide a welcoming place to everyday people, where they can have fun, learn, socialize, grow, be supported and find acceptance.
