Affirmations Hosts Interactive Exhibit on Discrimination

Though there have been huge strides in the acceptance of transgender and gender non-conforming people, there is still much work to be done. For the last two years, Transcend the Binary, a Ferndale-based community health center, has worked to understand it. Participating with the University of Michigan, the organization has been studying the impacts of discrimination on both transgender and gender non-conforming people.
Over the course of the study, researchers arrived at, according to a press release, "eye-opening" results. The study focused on discrimination's effects on relationships, overall health and the coping methods as a result of it.
Now, Transcend the Binary is inviting the public to see the progress made in the study through an interactive art exhibit, featuring community portraits. The exhibit is called Sharing Our Strength and is led by a team of transgender and gender non-conforming artists.
The exhibit is running now, through Saturday, Jan. 6 at Affirmations in Ferndale. Attendees are encouraged to bring a $10 donation. Guided tours are currently scheduled for:

Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 4 and 7 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 4 at 4 and 7 p.m.
Friday, Jan. 5 at 4 and 7 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 6 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Affirmations is located at 290 W. Nine Mile Road. Interested visitors are welcome to drop by, or can reach out to [email protected] to register ahead of time for a tour.
