Affirmations offers new health programs for 2006

FERNDALE – Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center will be offering new health and wellness programs along with old favorites during the first few months of 2006.
Living with Depression: A four-week structured group focusing on the symptoms and causes of depression and skills to deal with depression. It isn't necessary to be diagnosed with clinical depression to attend, and the group is also open to individuals with a depressed partner or loved one. Please call to register before the first session. Suggested donation: $2. Starts Wednesday, Jan. 25 from 7-9 p.m. Runs for 4 consecutive weeks.
Caring Partners: This new drop-in support group, offered in collaboration with the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Michigan Chapter, will provide an opportunity for discussion and support as well as coping techniques for LGBT caregivers whose partners are struggling with Alzheimer's or a related dementia. Suggested donation: $2. 4th Wednesday of every month from 6:30-7:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 25.
Positive Support: This new support and information group is open to all LGBT individuals living with HIV or AIDS. Learn about the basics of HIV and AIDS, discuss disclosure and prevention, and get support from others living with HIV. Offered in collaboration with AIDS Partnership Michigan. This is a drop-in group. $2 suggested donation. 2nd Wednesday of every month, 7-8:30 p.m.
Weight Watchers: The only LGBT-targeted Weight Watchers program in Southeast Michigan currently meets at 7 p.m. on Thursdays, and the next 12-week series of sessions will start Jan. 26.
Health Insurance 101: If you are unemployed or self-employed and looking for health care coverage this workshop is for you. Todd Burwick of Brooks & Brooks, Inc. will help you explore your options for finding health insurance in Michigan. Saturday, Jan. 28, 1-2 p.m.
Pet First Aid: Learn about symptoms and care for common ailments and emergencies, instructions for creating a pet first aid kit, and tips on maintaining your pet's health and well-being. Offered by the American Red Cross. $40 fee. Must register by Feb. 10. Saturday, Feb. 18, 9 a.m. – to 1 p.m.
