DETROIT – Black Pride Society will present 'Stop the Violence Film Fest' on Thursday, Nov. 16. The evening event will take place at Focus Hope Conference Center in Detroit, 1400 Oakman Blvd. BPS extends this invitation to the entire community. Doors open 8 p.m., show starts at 9 p.m. A reception will be held throughout the evening.
Kimberly Jones, BPS board vice president and film fest coordinator, says,
"The Stop the Violence theme was chosen for several different reasons. One reason is that a couple of the films specifically 'Black Aura on an Angel' and 'Lark and Cher' are lesbian dramas that have tragic outcomes. They mimic things that are going on in the community today. They show firsthand how lesbians are depicted as crazy, and we need to stop making that our story."
Other films for the evening include "Brooklyn's Bridge over Jordan" and "DL Chronicles." The night offers both male- and female-themed films. Additional shorts will be shown if time permits.
MSW and spoken word artist Kalimah "Loc Mama" Johnson is the Mistress of Ceremonies and speaker for the evening. There will be a Q&A session following the films. Jones says Johnson was selected because, "She gives straight, blunt conversation in regards to the message for the evening and lesbian issues."
For those of you who have been waiting and wondering the 2007 theme for HTJ! Is "Color me Black." If you are interested in volunteering or becoming a BPS board member call the HTJ! Hotline at (888) 755-9615. You can also see someone at the Film Fest door for more information.
