During the summer of 2003, the Division of HIV/AIDS-STD (DHAS), HIV/AIDS Prevention and Intervention Section (HAPIS) will be collaborating with the Michigan HIV/AIDS Council (MHAC) Needs Assessment Committee implementing comprehensive needs assessment activities for HIV/AIDS care services in the State of Michigan. These activities will seek to identify service needs, gaps and barriers for persons living with HIV/AIDS (PWAs).
The primary goal of this needs assessment is to ensure that the continuum of care services funded by MDCH/DHAS/HAPIS reflect the current needs of PWAs in all areas of the state. A social-support group for Gay, Bi-sexual and transgender men is now available in the Port Huron area. The group will be meeting the 1st Tuesday of every month at the Port Huron Municipal Office Center, 100 McMorran Blvd., 4th floor conference room, Port Huron. Lansing Area AIDS Network (LAAN) is seeking emotional-support volunteers. People living with HIV and AIDS are in need of volunteers to provide emotional support and periodic assistance. LAAN is looking to train and assign these volunteers, called “buddies,” in the upcoming spring training. LAAN is seeking 20 new buddies who will participate in a two-session, six-hour training program and will then assigned to be a buddy to a person with HIV. The Saturday training programs are scheduled for February 8 and 15 and will be held in the LAAN offices at 913 W. Holmes Road, #115 in Lansing.
