Women’s Rap at Affirmations Revamped
The women’s rap group at Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center, in existence for over ten years now, has been revamped. The group is facilitated by Allison Fisher, an intern at the center, and is geared toward all women 18 years and older. The format of the group is open, with laid back discussion, and a chosen topic with questions prepared by the facilitator. Topics focus on issues pertaining to women and thus far have included: Relationships, Being Single, Lesbians in the Media, Butch/Femme, Hate Crimes and Coming Out. ÊFisher has restructured the program to make it stronger and bring in a wider audience. “I feel that a much richer discussion comes from a more diverse group of people,” says Fisher when speaking about the women’s rap group.ÊThe women’s rap group meets on Thursdays from7-9pmat Affirmations,195 W. Downriver Youth Group Begins
What is there to do Downriver? How about the new LGBTQ youth group? Affirmations and PFLAG downriver have collaborated to form the downriver youth group. We will be kicking off the group Saturday, November 1st at Grace Episcopal Church, 15650 Reeck Rd., Southgate, MI 48195. The youth group will run from 1:00pm-4:00pm and will be open to youth ages 13-20. If you have any questions regarding the downriver youth group, please contact Cass Varner at (248) 398-7105 x14.
