Community to remember murdered trans men and women

Transgender Day of Remembrance was originally organized to honor Rita Hester, whose 1998 murder was the impetus behind the "Remembering Our Dead" web project and a candlelight vigil in 1999.
In addition to several locations in Michigan, a web search by BTL showed that organizers in four countries and twenty-two U.S. states had registered events with the official TDOR website at http://www.gender.org/remember/day.
The following is a list of local TDOR events.

Bowling Green, Ohio, Nov. 16 – 19

Events at Bowling Green State University will include keynote presenter Mariette Pathy Allen, photographer and author of "Transformations: Crossdressers and Those Who Love Them," on Wednesday, Nov. 16; a vigil event on Nov. 17; Gender Cabaret on Nov. 18; and a Trans Symposium from 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Nov. 19. Ferndale, Nov. 17

Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center will hold their Transgender Day of Remembrance memorial event at Metropolitan Community Church of Detroit at 2441 Pinecrest in Ferndale at 7 p.m. Call 248-398-7105 for more information.

Flint, Nov. 19

TransGender Michigan will present "Transgender Monologues," a production showcasing the real-life experiences of transgender individuals and their significant others, families, friends, and allies, at The Good Beans Cafe at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 in advance and $10 at the door. Ann Arbor, Nov. 20

Remembering Our Dead memorial, to be held in the Rackham Assembly Hall on the University of Michigan/Ann Arbor campus, 4th floor at 5:30 p.m. Speakers will include historian and film director Dr. Susan Stryker. The speakers will be followed by a public reading of the names of victims of anti-transgender violence and brief biographies of those being remembered. Light refreshments will be served.
The memorial will be followed at 7:30 p.m. by a screening of "Screaming Queens: The Riot At Compton's Cafeteria" at the same location. Co-director and producer Dr. Susan Stryker will introduce the documentary and respond to questions following the screening. For more information call the UM Office of LGBT Affairs at 734-763-4186.

Kalamazoo, Nov. 20

Transgender Support Services at the Kalamazoo Gay Lesbian Resource Center will commemorate the 2nd annual Southwest Michigan Transgender Day of Remembrance at the Cathedral of Christ the King, 2600 Vincent Ave. in Kalamazoo at 4 p.m. A reception will follow.
