DETROIT –
Creating Change, the premier national grassroots organizing and skills building LGBT conference organized by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, is coming to Detroit next year. To help get the city ready for this conference, which is in its 20th year, a community information meeting will take place at the new Affirmations building April 12, beginning at 7 p.m.
Task Force staff members Sue Hyde and Russeel Roybal will lead the Thursday meeting, which will launch the 2008 Creating Change Host Committee. This committee will roll out the welcome mat for the 2,000 LGBT activists from across the country that are expected to attend the conference.
Creating Change 2008 will take place at the Detroit Marriott Feb. 6-12. NAACP Chair Julian Bond and the Rt. Rev. V. Gene Robinson, Bishop of New Hampshire and the first openly-gay bishop in the Episcopal church, will be two of the keynote speakers. Since 1988, more than 30,000 activist leaders have benefited from the training and camaraderie of Creating Change. Countless organizations have been birthed, nurtured and strengthened at the conference.
The Task Force will launch its training academy at the Detroit conference, a curriculum to boost political and organizational skills. The training academy will deliver innovative teaching sessions about ballot initiative campaigns, community organizing, nonprofit organizational management, leadership, media and fundraising.
